Mark's Car History

  Renault R8
Rear engined (1100cc) 4 door saloon, with swing rear axles and unservoed 4 wheel disc brakes. Fantastic traction from a standing start, but the handling was interesting, needed a paving slab in the boot (at the front). Taught me all about oversteer, sometimes the hard way :-)
  Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible
Interesting handling, swing axles again. Good fun car that was easy to work on.
  Hillman Avenger GLS
1500cc twin carb (75bhp), `luxury' version of GT. Uprated suspension on this, 35% uprated springs/struts on the front, and adjustable Spax on the back. Drove like an (old style) rally car, very easy to get sideways...
  Ford Cortina 1.6L (Mk IV)
  First of the company cars.
Ford Cortina 1.6L Estate (Mk V)
and another one, but with more room
Ford Cortina 1.6 GL (Mk IV)
and another, at least you could get the back to slide around.
Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia (Mk III, first front wheel drive Escort)
Luxury, and not bad performance either, for the time.
  Ford Escort XR3i
Least said the better... had a Janspeed exhaust as well! Brakes not up to the job.
  Citroën BX GTi 16valve
160bhp, 16valve 1.9l engine, a real holligan car, but very comfortable and versitile. Got it upto ~135mph, (no not in the UK, honest).
  Triumph Spitfire 1500
Fun car bought as a hobby car kept for about 18 months, lost money on it. Great fun, I think, but not enough time or space for it. Full of rust, rebuilt the carbs, and rear suspension.
  SAAB 900S
Last of the true SAAB's... but not my type of car, too much understeer, awfull gearbox. Engine wasn't too bad even if it was "only" 147bhp. Good on motorways.
  Citroën Xantia 16V
Same engine as BX, but different tune, and a different type of car.
  BMW 328i touring (E36)
The best, I never believed in the hype about BMW's untill I drove one. At least with a 6 cylinder engine they really are the ultimate driving machines. With 2.8litres its fast, and fun if you turn the traction control off....
  BMW 323Ci Coupe (E46)
2.5litres 170bhp, not as raw as the E36, nice comfortable cruiser, loads of gadgets, key memory seats etc..
  Fiat Punto 90ELX
Bought as a stop gap after taking voluntary redundancy and looking for a job
  Ford Mondeo 1.8TD GLX
awfull car but it gets from A-B (slowly...)
  Fiat Stilo 1.6 Dynamic
I like the way it looks, it's not a bad car although a bit sluggish. Lots of toys, A/C auto matic headlights etc, also it's got 17" alloys (not my choice).
  my wife's cars...
Started with a Mini (version unknown) to learn in, then a long list of Fiats, Uno, Panda, Tipo, Cinqucento, Punto, then we needed to tow (see equine page for reasons why) so Vauxhall Frontera Sport and then Land-Rover Discovery 300TDi (see 4x4 page) changed for another Discovey this time a TD5 and now replaced by a MY03 TD5 XS Discovery.

Other fun cars I've driven....
